Exploring the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes

One of the biggest perks of staying at Harrison Bluffs is direct access to the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes — a 73.2-mile paved trail that's consistently rated as one of the best rail-trails in America.

About the Trail

The trail stretches from Mullan in the east to Plummer in the west, following the path of the former Union Pacific Railroad through some of Idaho's most stunning scenery.

Getting on the Trail from Harrison Bluffs

Harrison is roughly at the midpoint of the trail, making it a perfect basecamp. The trailhead is right in downtown Harrison, just a few minutes from our campground.

Popular Trail Segments from Harrison

East: Harrison to Enaville (26 miles)

  • Follows the Coeur d'Alene River through a beautiful river valley
  • Passes through the historic mining towns of the Silver Valley
  • Relatively flat with gentle grades

West: Harrison to Plummer (30 miles)

  • Hugs the southern shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene
  • Stunning water views for miles
  • Passes through the Heyburn State Park area
  • Watch for osprey and bald eagles

Tips for Trail Users

  1. Bring water — there are long stretches without services
  2. Wear sunscreen — much of the trail is exposed
  3. Start early — mornings are cooler and the light is gorgeous
  4. Yield to others — slower traffic keeps right, announce when passing
  5. Watch for wildlife — deer, moose, eagles, and osprey are common
  6. Bring a repair kit if biking — flat tires happen

Bike Rentals

If you didn't bring a bike, rentals are available in Harrison during the summer season. Check with the Harrison Chamber of Commerce for current rental locations.

The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is one of the best reasons to visit this area. Whether you ride the whole thing or just enjoy a few miles, it's an experience you won't forget.
